Senate to Propose Closure of Part-D “Doughnut Hole”

Senate health reform efforts will include a proposal to close Medicare Part-D’s “doughnut hole,” providing better prescription drug coverage to seniors.

Details are yet to be released, but Senate leaders have committed to fully closing the doughnut hole (a current Part-D provision where the beneficiary receives drug coverage up to $2,700, then must pay 100% out of pocket until $6,154, when coverage begins again).  The House version of the health reform partially closes the hole.  Improving Medicare’s drug coverage is the AARP’s number one priority, bringing strong lobby power to the provision.
