Sources: Medicare Buy-In Proposal to be Dropped
As reported by CNN this morning, the proposed Medicare buy-in to seniors aged 55 to 64 will be dropped from reform efforts to avoid a Republican filibuster.
The buy-in will be dropped mainly to satisfy Senator Joe Lieberman, whose vote is crucial to bring the healthcare reform bill to a vote. Lieberman, an independent, has threatened to join Republicans and create a filibuster if the bill contains provisions for the Medicare buy-in or a public insurance option. Lieberman’s primary concerns with the Medicare buy-in were increased federal debt and a potential government takeover of insurance.
