Medicare Attempts to Expand List of Unreimbursable Hospital Complications

In August 2007, CMS announced that Medicare would not reimburse hospitals for eight preventable conditions that patients acquired during hospital stays (see our previous post). Nor could hospitals bill Medicare patients for these costs. CMS Updates Standards for E-Prescribing

Continuing its push toward utilizing IT in health care, CMS recently released new regulations regarding e-prescribing standards for Medicare Part D prescriptions.  The regulations apply to all prescribers, dispensers, and sponsors that are involved in electronic transactions of Part D prescriptions and beneficiaries. CMS Launches Website to Compare Hospitals’ Quality

In an effort to enable patients to better choose health providers, CMS recently launched a website to allow comparisons of quality metrics of different hospitals.  With the trend of medical care heading toward empowering consumers to make better decisions, many organizations, especially CMS, are touting the need for reliable information.  The idea is that consumers will be better suited to choose appropriate health providers if comparable information is made widely available.
